General McChrystal should Not be Fired
I was very saddened to see General McChrystal fired or (if you want to be technical) President Obama accepted his resignation. This is a really good guy who served his country so nobly and faithfully in areas that none of us will really ever understand; he ran some of the most dangerous missions against some of the most lethal terrorists. He never disobeyed an order nor acted with insubordination.
What he did was acted stupidly and allowed himself to be caught off guard around a reporter. No one can excuse what they said, but how can this be compared to what happened with General MacArthur What MacArthur did was as serious as it can get, of course he should have been fired and Truman did the right thing! General MacArthur was disagreeing with massive issues of strategy of the President of the United States and doing so publicly! That is big stuff. McChrystal never countermanded an order or rebelled against the president. He should have been reprimanded for what he did and should have been allowed to continue. Even the military has a strict code of conduct but there has to be some level of forgiveness. We needed this general to run the campaign in Afghanistan, it is a very difficult war to fight. McChrystal has given it his all, are we really going to allow a newspaper article to undermine all of that? I have been caught off guard around reporters, President Obama has been caught off guard with reporters, Vice President Biden used the F-word recently after the health care reform passed not realizing the microphones were still on! We all make mistakes and to say that McChrystal should not have had any reporters around at all is wrong because the American people need to know what is going on in Afghanistan.
I am really sad about General McChrystal I think McChrystal should have publicly apologized and maybe all of the military would have learned something from it and I don’t think it would have happened again for a long time. Relieving him of command, I think we demonstrated ourselves to be an ungrateful nation.
Petraeus is a good replacement but he has been working day and night for so many years. The man is tired, how much more can we tackle him with? President Obama is a highly mature and wise man. I disagree with him on so many of his policies but I here I think he could have shown himself as a man of magnanimity. I don’t agree with this decision. So let me state a conclusion: What General McChrystal did was terrible, incredibly silly and one wonders how a man with that kind of training and experience could have been so naive. But relieving him of command basically says that for some infractions, generals get ruined. Anyway, these are my thoughts and they have been so important to me that I am recording this from an outing with my kids because I believe that service to the country should be rewarded even when they make terrible, terrible errors. This is perhaps one of the silliest articles the rabbi has written - no small achievement.
The rabbi has never received any military training, knows nothing about military commanding and leadership, and it shows.
Apologizing and asking and receiving forgiveness might work in civilian life but not really in a military one. The military approach is taking responsibility for your actions. Yes, from a civilian point of view, it sounds kind of cold. But it is very necessary when considering how many lives are at stake, how many soldiers need to be motivated to risk their lives every day, and how a mess like this is perceive in the rest of the world (Afghanistan, to say the least). What will you say to the family of the next soldier that dies in Afghanistan? that the commander in chief and the general don’t even agree about the mission and that we can’t exactly say what the soldier died for?
One of the most ridiculous points in the article was when the rabbi tried to empathize with Obama and McChristal by saying that he’s also “been there” shooting his mouth off when a reporter was around. To compare himself - an uneducated cult member of an ultra-orthodox sect - to the president and a high ranking general is one of the most ridiculous and pretentious things i have ever heard.
It took many years for enlightened nations to separate their strategic military decision making processes from fundamentalist religious zealots, and a good thing too.
Anyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. This one, on this pedestal, just happens to be quite ridiculous. -
