Hilary’s joke at the expense of the Modern Woman
Yesterday on CNN there was a forum for the meeting of the Democratic candidates between Hilary Clinton, John Edwards, and Barrack Obama where each discussed their faith. When asked what she prayed for, Hilary Clinton joked that she often prayed to G-d to lose weight.
Now I know that it was meant to be humorous, but her comment underscores what I have been saying about the assault on women in American for the longest time. Here is the first ever, viable candidacy by a woman for the Presidency of the United States and what’s on her mind? Her weight!
You know, the feminist dream of years ago was that women would no be judged by their bodies but by their brains, not by their bust but rather by their minds and when even someone who is, supposedly, as serious as Hilary Clinton needs to talk about her weight is just goes to show you how that dream failed. This is no laughing matter- the pressure put on women to be young, pretty and fit is so great that 5% of women in America have eating disorders and are literally starving themselves to death.
Look, I never would have believed that the richest country in the world with thank G-d, stores and supermarkets stocked with food, would produce 5 out of ever 100 women who are beginning to look like concentration camp inmates, their bones jutting out of their skin ribcages that are protruding from their battered frames. That we have caused them to hate themselves so much we have to begin to take it more seriously. Of course it serves as the main subject of my book ‘Hating Women’, which I published in 2005. It is time we started taking that message seriously.
