Our bike ride through Sandy Hook, New Jersey

Yesterday, I took our family to the Gateway National recreation area in Sandy Hook, NJ.  I’ve lived in New Jersey for almost eight years and I didn’t know this place existed.  We love finding new bike rides and I found it in a book on bike trails in New Jersey and it was absolutely amazing.   Although it rained the entire time and we were soaked to the bone, it was a fifteen mile bike ride through the most beautiful scenery, albeit cloudy and foggy, with both sides a view of the ocean.  More interesting, is that there is an old army base there that lasted 200 yrs that guarded the entrance of the New York Harbor and you can see the old cannon and the more modern-day missile systems of the ‘50s and ‘60s that were placed to defend New York.  It was also an ordinance testing site where they would bring giant cannons and fire them the length of Sandy Hook about 5 miles to test the effectiveness of the cannon.  All and all, it’s a great place to take the kids.  Main thing is, get your kids up and out away from the front of the TV and doing something.
