Adults don’t seem to care if other adults use bad language, but the minute their kids do, it’s “WHAT did you say?” or “WHERE did you learn that?”
Are kids picking up bad language from you? And why do we care when our kids say it, if we use bad language ourselves?
Words establish our dignity as people. Conversely, the abuse of launguage establishes our vulgarity. We should instead use something refined and profound.
Why do suddenly care of so much about bad language if our kids use it? We know that kids are innocent, and not vulgar, and when we use bad language around them, it’s a tacit acceptance of our own corruption. The moment that kids use it, they change their mind.
Some studies show that Americans’ entire vocabulary consists of about 3,000 words, even though we have one of the most developed and extensive languages in the words. We have so many ways to express ourselves, but choose only to use a few words. For example, we love using the words “like,” “you know,” and “thing” all the time.
Rabbi Shmuley thinks sophisticated language is not used enough in our culture. In the U.S., we can’t really name a huge number of great American orators in recent years—we really have to go back forty years to when J.F.K. was in office. Yes, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have made their marks, but orators like them have become a rarity in modern times.
Rabbi Shmuley thinks that using vulgarity teaches our kids a very bad example. It’s a sign that you can’t find any other way to express our emotions. Secondly, it’s not just profanities and curse words. It makes you look bad to others when you lack a broad vocabulary and the ability to construct complex thoughts through speech.
Parents need to make sure their kids don’t use bad language. It shouldn’t be allowed in the home or in social situations even with friends. Encourage your kids to come up with other—and better ways—to express themselves. This all comes back to the fact that language is a reflection of character. Ask your kids if they want to be seen as vulgar and mean, or intelligent and thoughtful.
Parents also need to watch how much they use vulgar language in front of their kids. Teach your children to be articulate—both in speech and in writing. It’s part of how they reveal themselves to the world.
SHMULEYISM: Human dignity is most captured in refined language. The ability for men and women to express their emotions through words is a distinctively human trait, which is compromised when we choose to be vulgar. If your kids use foul language, you might point to the school or their friends—but don’t forget to look in the mirror, too.
