The Corruption Charges against the NJ Rabbis
A friend of mine called me today and said to me, “the 5 Rabbis who were arrested in New Jersey is all a result of a culture of insularity and Jews are too insular.” Yeah, Jews are too insular, a lot of ethnic groups are. I’ve fought insularity my whole life; I’m a Jewish universalist, proud of my identity but I’d also like to share the light of Judaism with everyone and I’ve learned so much from other people’s faiths, ethnicities and cultures. We are a multi-ethnic society and that’s how it should be. But my objection is when people label just orthodox Jews as insular and deem that insularity as injurious to the integrity of the community. Look at all the stories coming out about Wall Street and look at the culture of insularity there. Today’s Wall Street Journal and New York Times both have massive stories about the Attorney General of the state of New York, Andrew Cuomo’s release of this report about the vast, unheard of, unseemly sums being paid in bonuses by Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Chase. One guy got $27 million at JP Morgan Chase, which is more than Jamie Diamond, the chairman. The bonus per employee comes out to $700,000. These are banks that were being bailed out just a few months ago. Why was Goldman Sachs bailed out? Maybe it had something to do with their culture of insularity and that Hank Paulson was the secretary of the treasury, because Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch didn’t get bail outs, they had to be taken over by Bank of America. AIG got tens of billions of dollars of money from the tax payer and 10 billion went straight to Goldman Sachs, who got paid 10 cents on the dollar for their AIG debt when in reality it was a terrible investment and they should have lost some of it. But, again, that’s the culture of insularity.
This criticism is one that I’ve been hearing from some of my more secular Jewish friends who have been calling me very angry saying “look what these Rabbis did, they’re so insular, they live in their 16th century Polish shtettle communities and that’s why there’s corruption because they’re not exposed to the enlightenment of modernity…” Come on! Secular has just as much corruption, if not more. Let’s say what these Rabbis are being accused of, because let’s not forget people have the presumption of innocence. If they are found guilty, g-d forbid, it’s criminal, it’s terrible, it’s a desecration of g-d’s name, and we have to condemn it in the strongest possible terms. But to immediately say that all orthodox Jews, because they are insular, are like that is like saying that everyone on Wall Street is a criminal. There’s a lot of criminals on Wall Street, we’ve discovered, but there’s also probably a lot of decent, hard-working people, whose only intention is not to be greedy but just to feed their family. There are decent people everywhere and there are jerks everywhere and to label any group as being too insular, too corrupt, too greedy, too criminal is the essence of bias, prejudice, and racism.
I’m a Rabbi, I’ve been very critical of what those other Rabbis did, but I’m not going to distance myself from them, they are my fellow Rabbis and we all bare some sort of culpability because Rabbis are responsible for educating the Jewish people and making sure there are good values in our community. Having said that, let’s not tar and feather everyone because of the actions of a few.

Dear Shmuley,
Regarding insularity I think your friend is missing a point here.
All of the groups involved (Politicians, Rabbis and Doctors) are all but insular to human condition, to poverty, to sickness, to death.
Most of us really are insular to these issues because we take care of our jobs, families and are not really exposed to much real distress. Our careers do not require us to be spectators of human suffering such as theirs do.
For me this raises the question:Isn’t it disturbing that people appear to be frustrated only at the Rabbis ?
I mean, please do feel very frustrated at them, but have we really learned to expect so little of Doctors and Politicians that it doesn’t shock us as much to see them in the roles of crime facilitators or just plain corrupt ?Certainly every profession has its ethical boundaries, and in all of them there is a minority of individuals who choose to cross them. Otherwise our society would collapse.
For these particular three groups, we have a dire need to believe this to be the case. Yet, it is a shame the Public seems to have lost this perspective about Politicians and Doctors.
