Why have Christian organizations remained silent about Mel this time, but supported him 4 years ago?
When The Passion of the Christ came out, I commented then at my disappointment in my Christian brothers and sisters for rallying behind Mel Gibson and his movie—with his shocking, anti-Semitic portrayal of hook-nosed, money-grubbing Jews clamoring for the blood of Jesus.
It is equally disappointing that they have failed to condemn Mel, whom they once regarded as a champion of Christian values, when he has been exposed as an anti-Semite, a racist, an alleged domestic abuser, and a man who can abandon his devoted wife of 28 years and the mother of his seven children.
When The Passion came out, I said that Mel Gibson is a religious charlatan and a pious fraud. I take no pleasure in having been proven right. This is a new era of Jewish and Christian brotherhood, and Christians ought to condemn those who seek to return us to a time of Christian hatred of Jews.
I believe that many Christian leaders, having made the mistake of getting behind Mel Gibson for The Passion, have boxed themselves into a corner. They fear that repudiating Mel would be a repudiation of their past support of the film.

SOME Christians supported Mel because he made a movie about Jesus. Most Christians see Jesus being crucified by those whose power was threatened. After all, Imperial Rome would have replaced pious Jewish leadership with their puppets. I found the violence of The Passion shocking, but my faith in more in Christ’s spiritual than physical sacrifice. I wrote Mel off before The Passion when I read about his drinking and dancing with other women. As for not speaking against Mel’s outbursts, adultery, abandonment, bastardy, and violence, like most people, some Christians find id difficult to hold differing views simultaneously so after they decided that he was a good guy when he made the movie, they didn’t take in any information about him afterward. Some people even loathe changing their minds when new data does get in. It is kind of like some people’s support for George Bush. He was a good guy because he was supposed to be a “Christian”. That he started two wars that killed a hundred thousands Iraqis and ? Afghans, tortured people, ignored a failing economy and spent time trying to keep homosexuals from adopting could be ignored. None of those are my priority as an American or moral being. I believe the cognitive dissonance described here can be described as the sin of thoughtlessness. If we actually thought through the issues instead of blindly following leaders who scratched our itching ears imagine what type of world we could bring to pass.
In a word: Mel Gibson is a discredit to his faith, gender, race, etc.

You pose excellent questions which are very relevant especially to those not of Christian understanding. First of all, I would like to say that I never viewed The Passion as anti-Semetic. I don’t know the personal experiences of others which may influence how this movie was viewed. However, keep in mind that all the disciples are Jewish, both Marys are Jewish, and Jesus is of Jewish lineage. In addition, The Passion closely followed the Gospel of John (Jewish disciple, apostle, eyewitness). I do believe that Mel was moved by the Holy Spirit to make this movie as he states. In the walk I share with God I never focussed on the physical pain that Jesus endured, and seeing this movie added a new dimension to the relationship shared between God and myself.
As for Mel’s behavior, I can say that the Bible states that we all sin and fall short of the glory of God. I know that when a person makes a loud statement for God’s glory, then all the more Satan will come out full force to tempt and test that person in order to cause him to stumble and dirty that person’s testimony. Peter was not at his most spiritual during Jesus’ trial and crucifixion. Jesus knew this prior, and even told him that Satan would sift him as wheat.
I was very disappointed for Mel when he started to backslide to such a degree that he would even leave his wife (and all the other things that he has done that do not exhalt his Savior. And I have been disappointed in some of the things I have done, also). However, I have been making it a point to pray for Mel that the Lord draws him back to Him and strengthens his faith. People are not perfect by any means. Sometimes we do fail. Fortunately, we have a wonderful, loving, forgiving Lord Who does forgive us when we truly seek repentance. And should I not remind you that King David, who loved the Lord so strongly, also fell victim to his own human foibles, committing not only adultry but also murder? Yet he did eventually realize what he had done and sought true repentance. -

After reading Shmuley’s comment I reseached The Passion. Gibson was quoted as saying Christ died for sinners including Mel.

Quoting Gibson from the time of the release of the passion: Gibson explained one of his appearances in The Passion film, the close-up of his hands nailing Jesus to the cross: “It was me (Gibson) that put Him on the cross. It was my sins [that put Jesus there].”
I can’t imagine any Christian thinking otherwise.
As for cognitive dissonance, it’s like refusing to accept that Christians believe Jesus is God. You don’t have to agree with in, but if you are being intellectually honest you have to understand it.

First of all Rabbi, Oxford’s Loss has been NYC’s gain!
I appreciate Gibson’s Film, The Passion. It is neither more nor less because of his behaviour good or bad, like the works of Da Vinci, it is art. Love it or loath it. It has never IMO caused anti-Semitism, but it like the books that it is based upon it can unjustifiably incite anti-Semitism.
The arguments have been put, his Judaism and that of his family and friends, all were Jews. He died in history and in the film as a Jew on a cross. As a Christian, I believe it was for my (and Mel’s) sins and as the Christian Credo clearly states put to death by the Roman Pontius Pilate.
In this week, where, in the UK the Pope has asked Government to listen to the religious voice, he also reminded Christians (and all religions) that faith must be tempered by reason. Surely, that is the most Jewish of ideas! He also recognised the Oxford scholar John Henry Newman, not for his conversion. But, for his legacy of reason, in particular the importance of the formation and use conscience.
Rabbi, I wish you well, and I enjoy seeing your light of reason. -
